Electroacupuncture treatment of acute low back pain: unlikely to be a placebo response.

چکیده
CASE SUMMARY The patient was a 65-year-old retired Caucasian woman with good general health. In mid-March 2014 she had had a sudden onset of pain over the right lower back. She denied any history of trauma. Initially the pain was subtle, with severity scored at 2/ 10, diffuse, constant, aching in nature and not radiating. In the next 7 days, the pain had become moderate-to-severe. It was improved by rest to 5/10, but worsened to 7/10 with leaning forward. She did not have any history of LBP, mechanical trauma or bone fracture. She was not taking any anti-inflammatory medication or painkillers. She looked generally unwell and was obviously in pain. She was overweight. Palpation of the vertebrae and paravertebral muscles below the level of T12 did not induce the pain. The pain was exacerbated when she was asked to flex her hip and laterally rotate her right lower limb. Flexion of the hip caused more pain than other movements. It was located at about 1.5– 4.0 cm right lateral to L2 to L4.

Effects of electroacupuncture on pain, functional disability and ultrasonographic changes of gluteus maximus muscle in non-specific chronic low back pain patients with gluteus maximus muscle trigger points
Introduction: Chronic low back pain is one of the major musculoskeletal problems. The presence of trigger points in the gluteus maximus muscle is a factor in increasing back pain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of electro acupuncture on pain, functional disability and ultrasonographic changes of gluteus maximus muscle in patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain with tri...
متن کاملEfficacy of electroacupuncture and TENS in the rehabilitation of chronic low back pain patients.
Fifty-four patients treated in a 3-week inpatient rehabilitation program were randomly assigned to and accepted treatment with electroacupuncture (n = 17), TENS (low intensity transcutaneous nerve stimulation, n = 18), and TENS dead-battery (placebo, n = 18). Outcome measures included estimates of pain (on a Visual Analogue Scale) and disability by both physician and patient, physical measures ...
متن کاملEffect of acupuncture on the pain of patients with acute low back pain: A randomized double-blind clinical trial study
Introduction: Low back pain is one of the most common causes of daily activity limitation and functional disabilities that affect a large number of people in the community. Due to the ineffectiveness of oral analgesics in relieving this type of pain and the need for their long-term use, which has its own side effects, the present study investigated the supplementary effect of acupuncture on pai...
متن کاملP-Stim auricular electroacupuncture stimulation device for pain relief.
Acupuncture is now accepted as a complementary analgesic treatment. Auricular acupuncture is a distinct form of acupuncture. Electrical stimulation of acupoints (electroacupuncture) increases the effects of acupuncture. Recently, an auricular electroacupuncture device, the P-Stim, has become available. Clinical studies in outpatients have investigated the P-Stim in chronic musculoskeletal pain ...

INTRODUCTION Recurrent or persistent low back pain is common after back surgery but is typically not well controlled. Previous randomised controlled trials on non-acute pain after back surgery were flawed. In this article, the design and protocol of a randomised controlled trial to treat pain and improve function after back surgery are described. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This study is a pilot ran...
